split infinitive

Definition

split infinitive rate
(Noun) To separate "to" from its accompanying verb; e.g., the Star Trek catch-phrase "To boldly go where no man has gone before"
without the split infinitive would be "To go boldly ... ."
Usage: The reason given for avoiding split infinitives is that "There's no Latin example of a split infinitive" - but since Latin infinitives are a single word, the reasoning is nonsensical and split infinitives are commonplace nowadays.
